Rio Old Town: Municipal Theater

Image
The Municipal Theater is located in Cinelândia, a famous square in the Historic Center of Rio de Janeiro. It was built in 1909 taking inspiration from the Paris Opera Garnier. Construction is a work of art. Its facade is iconic with emphasis on the golden eagle that is at the highest part of the building. The interior is majestic with an emphasis on the marble staircase. The theater offers guided tours, an incredible tour where you can see the monument in detail.

Barra da Tijuca: The Miami of Rio

Image
Barra da Tijuca is a new neighborhood compared to the main neighborhoods in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is in the West Zone of the city and is marked by having the longest beach in the city. The occupation process intensified in the 1990s when large condominiums were built on its edge and close to Avenida das Américas. It has a profile that resembles the city of Miami and many joke that Barra is the Miami of Rio de Janeiro. The characteristics between the two are many, the great avenue cutting the neighborhood, the shopping malls, the residential condominiums written in English and the lagoons and the beach that has a certain resemblance to the famous North American city. Due to disorderly occupation and the consequent high number of residents, Barra da Tijuca suffers from traffic that at certain times makes it impossible to move around the neighborhood.

Guanabara Bay

Image
Guanabara Bay is located in Rio de Janeiro and bathes five other cities in the Metropolitan Region. They are: Niterói, São Gonçalo, Guapimirim, Magé and Duque de Caxias. Unfortunately it is polluted due to the lack of sanitation in the surrounding cities. Despite this, nature bravely resists. In some sections it is possible to see dolphins and birds. In the city of Guapimirim there is an ecological reserve that preserves the last mangrove area in the bay.

Rio Old Town: Praça XV

Image
Praça XV is one of the main squares in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro. Surrounded by important monuments is the Paço Imperial, the first residence of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil. In front of the square is the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, the city's old cathedral. It also houses the Arco do Teles, the last colonial arch in the city. At the back of Praça XV is the ferry station from which boats leave connecting the city center to the islands of Guanabara Bay and the city of Niterói. A few years ago, a modern tram line was opened that connects the square to other points in downtown Rio.
