Rio Old Town: Praça XV

Praça XV is one of the main squares in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro. Surrounded by important monuments is the Paço Imperial, the first residence of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil. In front of the square is the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, the city's old cathedral. It also houses the Arco do Teles, the last colonial arch in the city.

At the back of Praça XV is the ferry station from which boats leave connecting the city center to the islands of Guanabara Bay and the city of Niterói.

A few years ago, a modern tram line was opened that connects the square to other points in downtown Rio.
