FIRST RESIDENCE OF THE PORTUGUESE ROYAL FAMILY

The Paço Imperial is a historic spot located in Praça XV, one of the main squares in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro.

It was the first residence of the Portuguese royal family when they fled to Brazil in 1808.
The building hosted important moments in the history of Brazil, such as the signing of the Lei Áurea, a law that instituted the end of slavery in the country.
Currently the space works as a cultural center, and has fixed and traveling exhibitions with free admission.
