AVENIDA RIO BRANCO, A HISTORIC AVENUE

Avenida Rio Branco is one of the main thoroughfares in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Over a hundred years old, the avenue had its final stretch transformed into a public walkway.

It was opened at the beginning of the 20th century representing the biggest project of the time. The works were intended to make the city center elitist, removing the poor population and building refined buildings in place of the old residences.

Some estimates say that around 20,000 people were evicted for the opening of the road. Families even lived on the street for a while until the government directed them to a new home.

The project was inspired by the architecture of Paris, with a large avenue bordered by imposing buildings. Some of them remain standing today, such as the Municipal Theater and the National Museum of Fine Arts.
