Pedra do Sal, where samba was born

Pedra do Sal is one of the most famous spots in Little Africa, a region in the center of Rio de Janeiro of great importance for the black history of Brazil.

In the past, enslaved black men unloaded the salt that came from the sea on a small pier that no longer exists.

Centuries later workers from the city's port would gather there to sing, sing and drum, thus samba was born, one of the most famous musical styles in the world.

To this day, the so-called "Rodas de Samba" event takes place where people gather in a circle and sing classic sambas in reverence to the masters who created one of the most Brazilian styles of music.

The events take place every Monday and Pedra do Sal is close to Praça Mauá, one of the main squares in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro.
