Fiscal Island, a gothic beauty

Ilha Fiscal is located in Guanabara Bay near Praça XV, the historic center of Rio de Janeiro. It became famous for hosting the last ball of the Portuguese Empire, days before the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil in 1889. Its name is due to the place having served as a customs post in the past.

The site is currently managed by the Brazilian Navy and is open to visitation.
