What is the carnival?

Carnival emerged centuries ago and over time it has changed. But the main focus has always been on fun, relief on account of suffering life.

In Rio de Janeiro there are two carnivals. The one of the "Blocos de Embalo", which are associations that parade through the city streets, attracting thousands of people.

And the samba schools, famous worldwide for the luxurious parades that take place at the Sambódromo, the great stage of Rio's carnival.

While the "Blocos de Embalo" are free, with the possibility for anyone to participate, in samba schools it is different.

For these organizations, the carnival begins around April, May, when the themes of the parades are defined. Hence, the qualifiers for choosing the samba-enredo start, as if it were the school's anthem. This samba summarizes the idea of the theme presented by the samba school. Meanwhile in the so-called "barracões", a place where costumes and floats are made, the work continues to be intense for the preparation of the parades.

It is noted that in this modality the carnival is more complex requiring a more intense and in-depth work.

Obviously because of the pandemic, this year's carnival was canceled. But here is the record of one of the biggest events in the country.
