Rio de Janeiro City

Rio de Janeiro is a city famous for its cinematic landscape that was even listed by UNESCO. The beaches, forests and a historic center that brings together buildings from different centuries form an incredible scenario.

The city is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, located in the Southeast Region of Brazil. It is divided into four main regions: South Zone, North Zone, West Zone and Center. There are tourist spots in all regions.

But when we talk about infrastructure, Rio is precarious. There are only two subway lines and train lines that connect the Center to the districts of the North and West areas. As in the large capitals of Brazil, housing projects are practically nonexistent, resulting in an increasing number of people living on the streets. Another point that ended up becoming a characteristic of the city are the favelas. These areas began to emerge intensely at the beginning of the 20th century due to a major project to elitize the city center. This project left thousands of families homeless. People then began to occupy the hills surrounding the Central Region and these areas grew unchecked.

Currently, the population of Rio de Janeiro is approximately six million inhabitants.

There are two airports that serve the city. Galeão International Airport located in the North Zone and the Santos Dumont Airport which is in the Downtown.

Rio de Janeiro has two of the largest urban forests in the world. The Pedra Branca State Park and the Tijuca National Park.

The city has two major events that are internationally famous. The New Year's Eve that takes place on the famous Copacabana Beach and the carnival that takes place between February and March and is considered the greatest show on earth.

This is the city of Rio de Janeiro, with its wonders and problems.
