Cinelândia - Rio Old Town

Cinelândia is one of the main squares in the Historic Center of Rio de Janeiro. It is at the end of Avenida Rio Branco.

It was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was part of the various interventions that elitized the city center. His project was inspired by the large European squares with imposing constructions around them.

In the 1920s the opening of several cinemas in the region began, which ended up popularizing the famous nickname Cinelândia, as its official name is Marechal Floriano.

Today the square still maintains its old buildings that contrast with the abandonment of the city. Several people live in the square because of the lack of public policies aimed at housing. Another point that remains is the square as a stage for political demonstrations, even today it is the area where demonstrations frequently take place.
